Drive-Thru

martha on March 3rd, 2009

I can remember when drive-thrus were new. The First National Bank on Main St, had not been built yet, but they had the drive-thru working out back. It was if they just stuck this little building out there with a couple of lanes. One day I was with Elsie and she went to the drive-thru it was neat. It is funny how you recall random thoughts.

christmas cards

Paula Netherland on December 10th, 2008

I love getting mail…seriously.  Since you never know what you’re going to get, it’s like a little present every day.  Sometimes you love it, sometimes you don’t, and sometimes (though not very often) it’s something you can regift to someone else.  Since I love mail so much, I really love the holidays because I know Christmas cards are on their way.  I always send my cards out riduculously early, but I can’t help it.  I just can’t wait to send them.  Well, today we got our first Christmas card.  It was so exciting to see it there in the mailbox.  Who’s it from?  What does it look like?  What does it say?  So many questions in just one little white (sometimes colored) envelope.  This year’s first card came from Aunt B and Uncle Buck.  Rea squealled in delight at the three little snowmen on the front.  She grabbed it and ran to show her daddy.  I love getting cards from Aunt B because she always puts the date on the inside and if it’s a birthday card she also puts a mark for each year.  I always count those little marks.  I love those little marks, and I love you Aunt B for making each one.

Saturday at the Westerns

martha on November 1st, 2008

I was channel surfing just a few minutes ago looking for something to watch, when the thought hit me. Today is Saturday and I remember that on Saturday’s Granny loved to watch Saturday at the Westerns. Gunsmoke, Rawhide, The Big Valley, Bonaza just to name a few.

I love you Granny.

Dear Granny

Granny (March 2008)

Dear Granny,

It is has been 5 short yet long months since Heaven called you Home. I always knew that Heaven would have a wonderful place awating you, I was just hoping that it would not have been ready so soon for you. Granny I am so happy that I have a lifetime of “Granny memories” that I can reflect on often. However on the other hand, I am sad that we will not be able to make more “Granny memories”. One of the things that I don’t understand is “Why did the world not stand still the day we lost you?” It should have, yet other people and their lives kept right on going.

Almost everything I see, do, read, or think reminds me of you, Granny. For example, a grilled burger, a commerical adversiting Las Vegas, or a new cookbook. Why? Everytime that you joined us when Pete was grilling burgers, it was a given that you told Pete to burn you a burger. Everytime that I saw a Las Vegas commerical, I remember when I told you that Pete and I was flying to Vegas for our anniversary, you said for us to be careful in Sin City. Cookbooks, well it just reminds me of you loving to sit and read a good cookbook. These are just a few of the things that trigger “Granny memories.”

Granny it goes without being said that these past 5 months have been difficult. It would have been alot worse without Paula, Katherine, and Tina. The four of us have become closer in a way that has been a comfort that they will never know how much it means to me. We have talked or emailed more than we ever have. The common demoninator is always you, Granny.

Granny, I tease all the others about being your #1 grandchild, but in reality each of us was your #1 grandchild. How did you manage to do that?

I will always love you in the way that only a grandchild can.

Loving you,

Martha Jane

View Master

martha on September 10th, 2008

Who remembers the View Master? If you had one of those you were “uptown”. It was the original DVD/CD system. You could go to the store and purchase new reels, renting was not avaiable. I can remember having a reel of the Bonanza show- black and white of course. With one slide of the lever you could change pictures – if you did not press the lever all the way down it would cause the pictures to not line up correctly. That was fun too. You could be in your own little world with the View Master – it could take you places. Do they still make View Masters? I just looked they do.

Next is the Mr. Potato story…..

Uncle HC

martha on September 6th, 2008

Today would have been Uncle HC’s birthday. With hunting season near – it always reminds me of Uncle HC and his in detail stories. Same as with his fishing stories. I think he loved telling the stories of hunting and fishing more then actually the hunting and fishing.

We miss you Uncle HC. (Shorty)

defrosting the icebox

martha on August 12th, 2008

I went over the Mother and Daddy’s last night. Whitney and I had supper with them. I sat at the end of the table where Mother usually sits. You know when you sit somewhere different you look at things from a different angle. While I was sitting there it brought back memories of Mother defrosting the icebox. Like I said, Mother usually sits at the end, the only time when I was little that I got to sit at the end was the mornings when mother was defrosting the icebox. Once a week Mother would take out everything on the icebox and put it on the table. She would leave just enough room for me to sit and have breakfast. The doors of the icebox was left open and she would put boilers of hot water in the icebox to help defrost the ice. The freezer was always the worse. You could hear the ice falling as it melted. I know that she must have been so glad to get one that was frost free. Back then the refridgerator was called the icebox. (I tend to still call it that alot)

Dippity Doo!

martha on August 9th, 2008

Do you remember Dippity Doo? I remember Mother using it. She would keep it on her dresser. It was in a clear jar with a white lid. The actual Dippity Doo was a pink gel that appeared to have lots of air bubbles in it. I quess this was the orginal hair mouse! I wonder if you can still purchase Dippity Doo?

Now to answer Katherine’s question, “What made me think of this?” I was channel surfing the other day and I came across Oprah! For some reason she was discussing hair care, and the topic of Dippity Doo came up.
