I love getting mail…seriously. Since you never know what you’re going to get, it’s like a little present every day. Sometimes you love it, sometimes you don’t, and sometimes (though not very often) it’s something you can regift to someone else. Since I love mail so much, I really love the holidays because I know Christmas cards are on their way. I always send my cards out riduculously early, but I can’t help it. I just can’t wait to send them. Well, today we got our first Christmas card. It was so exciting to see it there in the mailbox. Who’s it from? What does it look like? What does it say? So many questions in just one little white (sometimes colored) envelope. This year’s first card came from Aunt B and Uncle Buck. Rea squealled in delight at the three little snowmen on the front. She grabbed it and ran to show her daddy. I love getting cards from Aunt B because she always puts the date on the inside and if it’s a birthday card she also puts a mark for each year. I always count those little marks. I love those little marks, and I love you Aunt B for making each one.

I know I’m late on my column, but I’ve been so busy this month with work, remodeling, and school. I was sitting here when I noticed a wood pecker in the tree, outside my window. He was so pretty! It made me think of a story Aunt Sue told me. She says that she used to hate going to school. The boys would have to bribe her into going. One day Aunt Edith was over at their house and she gave her opinion on Aunt Sue going to school. She said that Aunt Sue should go to school and feel lucky that she even got the option of going. Well, that wasn’t what Aunt Sue wanted to hear. She got so mad that she blurted out, “Shut your mouth, you red headed pecker wood!”. I don’t know about you, but I thought that was pretty funny.

I know I’m a little behind on my column for this month, but better late than never…right? This month I’m going to talk about how rough my mom and Aunt Sue claim to have had it. So here we go:

Both my mom and Aunt Sue recounted to me of how they were unceremoniously kicked out of the house everyday and forced to play outside. They say that Edith and Elsie would lock the screen door so that they couldn’t get back inside…not even to go to the bathroom!

Aunt Sue said she used to share a bed with Aunt Elsie. She says that if she did something wrong during the day, that night Aunt Elsie would get her back for it with her long long nails.

Aunt Sue told me about one time that someone (who shall remain nameless; I want to see if you can guess who it is) was trying to rake the leaves while she was playing. They told her to move and when she didn’t do it fast enough they hit in the back of the head with the hoe! She says that there was so much blood! Can anyone guess who hit Aunt Sue in the back of the head with a hoe?

My mom also reminisced about how strict Uncle Jerry used to be with them. She says that he was always trying to change stuff about them. She likes to tell me about how he tried to teach her how to swallow properly. Supposedly she used to swallow really loudly and when it finally got fed up with it, he decided to attempt to teach her how to do it right. Mom says she remembers him showing her how to swallow over and over again. So now I’d like to pose a question for you Uncle Jerry, do feel like you successfully taught my mom how to swallow or did you just give up on her and she eventually grew out of the habit?

That’s it for this month folks. And to Aunt Martha, you might know who it was that hit Aunt Sue with the hoe. So don’t say anything if you do, give others the chance to guess.

Being an only child I was always so glad when Kathy was around. I just knew that we would get to play games. I guess you could say the grass always seemed greener on the other side. I wanted to have someone to play with instead of playing by myself or watching TV. Kathy just wanted to watch TV. I never saw anyone that could “tune” in to a TV show like she could. You could talk to her and she would not hear you. Maybe she was so tired of playing with others that all she wanted to do was to be alone and watch TV.
